Ben, are there any Tax Strikers in Port Augusta?

It’s funny that you should ask. As a matter of fact there are tax strikers in Port Augusta! Who or what is a tax striker? A tax striker or tax protester is simply someone who refuses to pay taxes – as distinct from someone who avoids or evades tax. Usually it is for a political motive. They are usually associated with deranged white supremacist survivalist gun-nuts in the united states with a grudge against the central government.

However in Port Augusta, they are people who refuse to pay their council rates. The city council is of course a form of government – local government – and council rates are a tax. The issue for the local tax strikers seems to be Port Augusta council’s management of the stormwater problem i.e. the council manage the stormwater by sometimes letting it flow through people’s houses.

I don’t blame people for refusing to pay council rates is this situation but I wouldn’t recommend it as you could lose your house.
